An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
